Is there a printed pattern? I'd make it big enough to fit me I think. Would that be OK? I have a hat I don't like and plan to reuse the yarn to make another.

What's your pattern name and can you link to it?
If that's at the end of the instructions for the row it's telling you to knit the last stitch that you increased 2 stitches as you worked the row.

Yet another SSK alternative

I'm calling it Grumpy's SSK
sl1 knitwise
sl1 pwise TBL (twists the stitch)
k2tog tbl (twists the 2nd st again)

I've just done mitered square type decreases - ssk, k1, k2tog - and it's the best...

You're welcome. I guessed right. I never remember for sure which is left twist and which is right twist unless I'm doing them. I was pretty sure New Stitch a Day had the video.
