I sympathize. I just had to wind one up by hand myself the other day. Here's a video that will show you how to wind a ball from a hank of yarn. I love Liat. She's a great teacher.

You can use Liat's stool idea to hold your yarn as you wind. You can use a chair back. I like to sit with my knees up and put my hank over both of my knees as I wind.
