BIG stitches, little yarn?

Quick question, what should I do (stitch/hook-wise) if I'm trying to cover as much space as I can with as little yarn as possible?

Making it look nice isn't really an issue, it just needs to be BIG. My boyfriend wants something to keep him warm and that smells like me, so I'm just pulling all of my oldest scraps of yarn that are too short for anything else or don't work with anything but the project they were originally for, and making a Franken-blanket. I don't want to have to buy new yarn for this, so I need to make the most efficient use of what I've got.

So, what is your advice? And be gentle, please, I'm a relatively new crochet-er.

I would just use a G hook and do hdc stitch and change colors whenever the mood struck me. If you don't mind holes then go for a H or J hook and use a dc stitch. Using as little yarn as possible isn't possible as crochet uses up more yarn than knitting. It will use up all your leftover yarn.

Okay, thanks. Also, I know crochet uses more yarn, but I haven't got a set of circulars long enough for a blanket this size.

You have circular hooks? I know they exist as I have seen them on Herrschners'.
Use a K hook and try a small swatch of the stitch of your choice. I still think hdc because the holes will be smaller. It will work up fast. You can figure size by crocheting a chain and when you get to the width you want then stop and turn the work and begin the nest row. I know they make larger needles as I have them but the larger the needle the bigger the hole. Let me know how it goes.
