Mysterious Twisted Stitches

I'm certain that when I joined my stitches (in the round, of course) none of them were twisted and they were all facing the same direction. However, I noticed on my third round that the stitches are twisted now.

I don't understand what I did. Is it possible to twist stitches after joining them? I checked the stitches out very carefully before I joined them (because I hate when this happens), but I don't know if there's another way this could have happened, or if it's possible that the (kind of) magic-loop method I'm using could have affected this.

I'd like to know what I did wrong so that I can avoid doing it in the future.

Yes, it is possible that when you joined they got twisted or when you pulled out the left hand loop one set got twisted then. Just watch them very carefully.
