How to knit vertical stripes?

I'm going to knit a piece and want a small stripe on the right and left edge that is a different color. I know there's some magical wrapping twisting hole avoiding technique, but I don't know how to do it.

Also, is the technique the same for the right side as for the left side?

Is there a video or tutorial on how to do this?

If you want a very narrow stripe (one or two stitches wide), you could also do it in duplicate stitch when the front is finished. Otherwise, it's intarsia.
