I'm following this pattern http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00686/SKM49_2__proj_sackb_686954a.pdf

what does "1st inc row" mean? does it mean I have to put in another extra stitch - giving me 13 stitches. OR do I just have to continue knitting my next row like normal??

and what does the "1st and 2nd dec" row mean?? :???:

THis all may seem so stupid to all you expert knitters, but I'm new to all these terms ^^; :hiding:

thankyou so much

It is telling you that you are about to do the first increase row. The instructions that follow: K1, (inc 1) three times, K3, (inc 1) three times, K2. [18 sts]
Are the row that you are doing after the cast on row. You are doing 6 increases to get to a total of 18 stitches.

1st and 2nd dec rows are the decrease rows. again you follow the instructions as given for those rows.

are there supposed to be holes there where I increased one stitch three times?

Whether you have holes, and how big they are, depend on the type of increase you did. You might want to have a look at the videos here to see what your options are:

From the sound of the pattern, I think you're supposed to use a kfb (knit in front and back of stitch) in 3 sts. And that doesn't leave a hole. So your row would be:

K1, kfb, kfb kfb, K3, kfb, kfb, kfb , K2

You'd start with 12 and end up with 18.
