Pattern help

The pattern has me doing 12 rows of ribbing, then it reads:
Change to garter st. K 4 1/2 ins.

Is this 4 1/2 inches from where I started the garter stitch, or 4 1/2 inches from the CO edge?

I'd say 4½" from where you start the garter st. 12 rows would be about 2-3" by itself. What does the next set of instructions say? Sometimes reading ahead can clear things up.

The next step is to switch back to the ribbing. Which wasn't much help. :)

I'll go ahead and do 4 1/2 inches of the body then. Thank you for the input.
