Double Sided Hat

Someone posted an easy way to knit double sided hats by just continuting to knit the hat in reverse. Was it you Ingrid? Please post again. I can't find it in the archives.

I did make a reversible hat. What I did was cast on provisionionally, make a hat from the bottom to the top.

Then I picked up the provisional stitches from the bottom of the hat, purled a row for turning and then knit another hat. One fits inside the other.

Ingrid, I'm not understanding the Provisional Cast On at all. I can see how it's done, but I don't understand what to do with it after it's done. Why do the provisional in the first place? The video says you can "remove it later", or something like that. Are you casting on in the two colors that each hat will be? Why would you "take off" one of the cast on? I'm lost. :??

You could knit a hat, then pick up stitches around the edge, but you'd get a seam. By using the provisional cast on, you can have live stitches to start the other hat and one will meld into the other without having a seam on the inside.

The provisional cast on is done with some waste yarn, and if done right will pull out like a row of crochet. It doesn't always pull out easily, for me anyway, but you can snip if you need to.

I generally do the one where you crochet a chain and then knit into the back of it.

It will feel a little odd when you first start knitting the hat, but when you finish the first half you just go to the bottom and put the stitches from the provisional CO on the needles do a purl row and then make another hat.

One note I didn't make before and I don't know if Ingrid mentioned.. keep track of how many rows you knit so the hats won't be different sizes. ;) I just used a pencil and paper to make hash marks for each row.

Thanks again to Jan and Ingrid. Jan, that site was very useful. It let me see why I'm doing a provisional cast on in the first place and helps explain what Ingrid is saying. I get it! I think the crochet method might be better for me. When I practiced the cast on like in Amy's video, it was loose and uneven looking.
