scarf troubles

Ive been making really simple double crochet scarves for christmas presents, and I'm running into a problem.

No matter how loosely I chain in the beginning, it is always too tight, and ends up shorter than the other end of my scarf. Why is this happening? Any ideas?

YOu could go up a size or two in hooks for your beginning chain - or cast on extra and skip chains when crocheting your first row. I used to skiip every fifth chain in my cast on - which meant I had to chain 20% more then the designated number.
