Pattern calls for 4" of ribbing for a collar then short rows to form an insert for the rest of the neck to meet the front.
I am suppose to take 111 stitches down to 39 by leaving 8 stitches on each row.
How do I do this?

Most patterns give instructions for technique used in that particular pattern. Does it have that? If it's a free pattern do you have a link? It helps if we can see the pattern.
Amy has a video of short row with a wrap (http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/advanced_techniques/), but I'm not sure that is the one you need to use.

Jan, Thanks for responding. I found the wrap and other methods in my books and had practiced but I couldn't figure out how it applied to my pattern. When I finally read that I wasn't increasing or decreasing stitches, I felt better. It then made sense to knit across the whole row at the end before binding off.
Thanks for the tip of KnittingHelp.com. I had been there before but on this occassion hadn't scrolled down enough to see that topic.
I think the pattern will work now but someone I talked to is interested in making it and I may wait to see how theirs comes out!
