I just finished my first hat on straight needles and now I have to close it I didn't pay attention to gage and it is to big. what is the best way to close it? can it be done on the sewing machine?

I ususally use the mattress stitch (http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/videos//bas-tech-more/mattress-stitch.mpg) when seaming knits. I've never used a sewing machine for a seam.

I really like the finished look of the mattress stitch and Ingrid's video shows just exactly how to do it.

Take your time seaming. It's a bit daunting at first, but you'll pick it up quickly.

And don't work to seam too tight, or it will pucker and be too rough.
