The pattern for this is here (http://frugalhaus.com/homepage/stars.htm) [link updated]. You start with a straight line that is the outer edge of the star, and as you knit, you work a double decrease at 5 places, and this brings you towards the center and creates the points. Follow the written pattern to get an 8" wide doily. Or start with 115 stitches for a 5" coaster. 95 stitches makes a good tree ornament. Or use any yarn and needles for a different size. (Cast-on stitches should be a number divisible by 20, minus 5.)
I also have a video of how to make one of these stars on double pointed needles. No seam! And no counting stitches! The video shows the project from beginning to end. It is too big to put on this live site, but is included on the site CD. Here's a picture of it as made on DPN's:
