View Full Version : FO - Brattleboro Hat

I finally finished another project. My new career has put a serious dent in my knitting time!

Anyhoo, this is the Brattleboro Hat. The pattern is in the Fall 2010 (http://www.interweaveknits.com/preview/fall-knits-2010.asp) issue of Interweave Knits.

My daughter modeled the hat for me...so I blurred out her face for safety reasons.

I've gotta tell you that the decreases on this hat really threw me for a loop. I just could not figure out how to make the instructions work with the pattern, and although I finally got a hold of the designer, I did not find her "clarifications" to be very helpful.

After knitting seven decrease rounds, I didn't like what I was doing, so I tinked and contemplated. I had a brainstorm, tried again, and figured it out (my notes are on my Ravelry project page, and I'll blog about the project soon).

The pattern, overall, is not difficult. I just wish I'd used a smaller needle (I used 5.0 mm). My daughter says the fit is just fine though.

You can't really tell in the pictures, but there is a sort-of faux button band.

I just love the buttons, which I got B1G1 today at Joann's. Yay! My daughter loves them too.

Oh...I used 65 grams of Malabrigo. The color is Bijou Blue. It is g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s yarn!! The ribbed band really shows it off well...

The neatest thing about this project is that my daughter, who is in her first year of college, looked at me and said, "If you have time, you can make me one."

Now, what would you have done?

Yep.

I told her it now belongs to her.

She has NEVER ever once asked me to make her anything. In fact, she has never expressed much interest in anything I've ever made.

This is her first long visit home from college. I think this hat (along with the other good memories from Thanksgiving) are the start of something beautiful.

Oh my gosh, that hat is so cute! What girl wouldn't want one? I'm glad you figured it out.

Ok...had to add a few more pictures.

My daughter straightened my hair this morning, and then she asked if I wanted to try on the hat again.

Folks, this is a straight-hair kind of hat. I have very thick, naturally-curly hair, so it makes the hat stick out funny.

With straight hair, however, the hat looks tres chic (if I do say so myself).

And yes, I'm showing my face. It's just too hard to show off this hat without someone's face showing...

My daughter snatched the hat off of my head as soon as we were done with our photo session.

She obviously reclaimed it.

But, the good news is that I found another skein of the same color Malabrigo, so I will DEFINITELY be making another hat!

Very attractive hat (and model!). Was it difficult to knit? Did you sew on the band after knitting the cap? or start with the band and pick up stitches to do the cap? I can't figure it out by looking at your pics....might have to buy the magazine, if I can find it at my LYS.

Cool hat! :cool: It has so many neat features (love the sideways knit, wide band, and the buttons, also the textured top and the way you did the decreases) and the yarn is sooo nice. :heart: I'm glad your daughter liked it so well. It is really rewarding when family members appreciate our work. I hope this time in your lives is the start of something beautiful as you said. Crossed Fingers

I don't want to reveal the pattern because it is copyrighted, but I would encourage you to buy this issue if you're interested. The hat pattern is one of the main reasons why I bought the magazine. Once I got the hang of the pattern, I was all set to go.
BTW, I cast on last night and am well on my way to having my own hat! :happydance:

auburnchic, love the hat! also love the 'my daughter liked it so it's hers. i have 'lost' several pairs of socks that way!! For some reason, the socks i make are usually too small for me, and my daughter says it subconsciously means the socks were meant for someone else all the time!! linknit41

That is a beautiful hat! I love that your DD asked for one (isn't it great when they actually *ask* you to make them something?! lol).
